Jim Voss has served as Head Coach for
the Duneland Swim Club since 1987, prior to joining DUNE he was on
the staff of the Sullair Piranha Swim Club from 1980-1987. Coach
Jim Voss’s swimmers currently hold 15 Age Group short course
state records and 10 Age Group long course state records, along
with 17 Open short course state records and 16 Open long course
state records. 4 of Coach Jim’s club swimmers have gone on to
compete at the US Olympic trials (Jenni Anderson 2000, Kyle
Whitaker 2008 and 2012, Bill Bass 2012, Albert Miller 2012 and
Aaron Whitaker 2012). Coach Jim’s Duneland Swim Club has 12
top 10 finishes at the state championship and 9 more top 20
finishes since 1987. Coach Voss’s teams have won the NWISC
conference swim meet 28 straight seasons and 32 total championships
since 1987. He has been a past president of the NWISC conference.
The Duneland Swim Club has placed numerous swimmers in the zone and
quad meets over the past 25 years under Jim Voss. He has been a
Catch The Spirit Camp coach. Coach Jim was, also, a guest
speaker at the 2010 ASCA World Swim Clinic in Indianapolis. This is
Coach Jim’s 50th season with the Duneland Swim
Club.

Kevin Kinel
Senior/High School Head Coach
Email
Coach Kevin Kinel has been
with the Duneland Swim Club since 1980. He has been named Indiana
Swimming's Senior Coach of the Season/Year three times (SCY Seasons
2007, 2008 and 2009). He has guided the Senior team to two Indiana
Swimming State Titles (2009 and 2012, both SCY). Coached Kyle
Whitaker to 6 LCM Junior National Titles and two National High
School Records. He has been part of Indiana Swimming's Olympic
Center Training Camp (2x's), Head Coach of Indiana Swimming 2010
Catch the Spirit Camp North and member of the Olympic Training
Development Camp Staff in 2012. Has been a speaker a several
coaching clinics, including the 2011 Indiana Swimming House of
Delegates meeting. Coach Kevin Kinel is an ASCA Lifetime Plus
member.
Kevin Kinel’s girls and
boys high school teams have won 18 Duneland Athletic Conference
titles each, while the girls also have 18 Sectional titles and the
boys have 16. His Trojans currently have won 13 straight
Duneland Athletic Conference and Sectional titles in girls swimming
and the boys have won 16 straight Duneland Athletic Conference
titles and 13 Sectionals. Kinel has won 39 individual or relay
state titles since joining Chesterton High School. “I could
spill out thousands of kids names that are part of this,”
Kinel said. “The elite level kids had the talent, but they
had someone else to train with and be supportive. All the coaches
in age group and high school have been unbelievable.” Jim
Voss in the age group has done an unbelievable job and I’ve
had several high school assistants through the years. Coach Kinel
has earned Sectional Coach of the Year a total of 27 times (boys
and girls combined), and was honored as Indiana High School State
Girls Coach of The Year in 1999, Indiana High School State Boys
Coach of the Year 2008 and 2009 and the National Federation of
State High School Associations Central Coach of the Year in 2000.
All total, Kevin Kinel has produced 53 first team All-Americans and
three Olympic Trial qualifiers. He is married to his wife Barb, and
has two sons, Ryan and Steven.

Kyle Smith
Associate Head Coach

Kyle joined the club as
Associate Head Coach in August 2010 with an extensive coaching
background in northwest Indiana. In 1999 he earned a Bachelors
Degree in Exercise Science from Purdue University, West Lafayette,
IN.
Kyle began his swimming
career at the age of eleven and has been involved in many aspects
of the sport since that time. As a young swimmer, Kyle swam for
East Chicago Sharks, Highland Hurricanes and Bishop Noll Institute.
In 1991, at Bishop Noll, Kyle was a member of the 200m Freestyle
Relay that set the National Independent High School
Record.
Before joining the
Duneland Swim Club he was Head Coach of the Portage Porpoise Swim
Club PPSC (2006-2010), Head Assistant Coach for Valparaiso Swim
Club, (2000-2002 and 2004-2006).
During his time at PPSC
and VSC he helped develop several Individual and Relay Age Group
State Champions, as well as, Individual Team Indiana Quad and Zone
Team Members. Coach Kyle has been a member of Team Indiana All-Star
Coaching Staffs, Central Zone Team 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2010
Mid-States/Quad Team. He was selected to the USA Swimming Central
Zone Select All-Star Camp staff in 2011 and the Indiana Swimming
Age Group Elite Camp staff in 2012.
Coach Kyle actively
serves on the USA Swimming Disability Swimming Committee, USA
Swimming Central Zone Disability Coordinator and is involved
with Indiana Swimming Board serving the following positions:
Indiana Coaches Representative, Age Group/Senior Committees,
Performance Committee and Disability Coordinator. Coach Kyle
is an ASCA Lifetime Member Level 3 Age Group and Disability
Certified Coach, Certified in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and
Lifeguard Certified.

Christy Kallay
Lead Assistant Coach

Christy Kallay joined the Duneland Swim Club as Assistant Coach
in 2011. She majored in Psychology and minored in Business at
Indiana University, Bloomington. She has worked for the
Duneland School Corporation for five years at Jackson Elementary as
an Instructional Aide for Kindergarten and First grade. She
is in her sixth year helping children build their confidence and
earn a better education.
Christy started her swimming career at age 11 with the Sullair
Pirahnas in 1981 where she swam under Coach Jim Voss. “Funny
how life can come full circle,” she said. She
also swam all through high school at Elston in Michigan City.
“Swimming was one of the best choices I ever made. I
made friends that lasted a lifetime. There is a special bond
between swimmers; they become your family. It also maintained
discipline in my life when I needed it most. I am so glad to
be involved again in a sport I loved so much. I have two jobs
where I get to help children better themselves and have fun.
What could be better?”
Coach Christy lives in Chesterton with her husband, Bob and two
children, Lauryn and Bobby, who also swim with the Duneland Swim
Club. “I have watched my children swim under an amazing
and inspiring coach and have learned so much. I only hope to
help give to other children what my own children have been so
fortunate to experience.”

Christine Kostbade
Assistant Coach
Email
Chris Kostbade has
joined the Duneland Swim Club as an Assistant Coach. She
earned her Master’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences from
Valparaiso University and her undergraduate degrees in Psychology
and German from the University of Wisconsin – Eau
Claire. Chris also spent a year abroad in Austria studying
clinical psychology.
Chris began her swimming career at the age of seven
and swam with the Hobart Tiger Sharks, the Southlake YMCA and
Hobart High School. As a member of the SLY team, Chris
qualified and swam several events and relays at Zones and Jr.
Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Chris went on to swim
for the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire from 1985
-1988. While there, she was a Four-time All American, a
Member of the NAIA Women’s National Championship Team (1st
place 1987, 1988), Member of four WWIA Conference
Championship Teams (1985-1988), WWIAC Champion in the 800 Freestyle
Relay (Setting both WWIAC and School Records 1987), Team Captain
(1987, 1988), and a NAIA Academic All –American 1987,
1988). During her year abroad, Chris swam with a swim
club in Austria for a brief time. In 1997, Chris was inducted
into the University of Wisconsin Blugold Hall of Fame for her
Achievements.
Chris has past experience as Head Coach and Asst.
Coach for summer age group teams and as a Red Cross swim instructor
and lifeguard. She is certified in CPR, and First
Aid.
After college she began working in the field of
mental health care with a focus in program development and
administration and has a passion for working with children and
adolescents in a variety of settings. She also works for Hilltop
Neighborhood House part time as the Marketing and Development
Coordinator.
Chris and her husband, Gary, have three boys (Gary
and Colin are proud members of the Duneland Swim
Club.)

Mindi Billings
Assistant Coach
Email
Mindi Billings has joined the Duneland Swim Club as an Assistant
Coach. Mindi began swimming for the Duneland Swim Club in 1986. She
swam for Coach Jim until graduating in 1998. She then attended
Butler University and graduated in 2001 with bachelor's degrees in
psychology and chemistry.
Mindi has past experience as the head coach for the Lake Central
Girls Varsity Swim team. She lead the 2005 team to a 9th place
state finish. She has also worked as a Red Cross lifeguard and
Water Safety Swim Instructor for many years. She has given private
swim instruction for the past 16 years.
Mindi has been married to her husband, Mike (also a former
Duneland swimmer), for 10 years and they have 3 girls: Madelin,
Molly, and Mallory. Madelin and Molly are proud members of the
Duneland Swim Club.

Patrick Ward
Senior/High School Assistant Coach

Patrick Ward has been
with Duneland Swim Club as an assistant coach since 2005. He has
also served as an assistant swim coach to Chesterton High School
since that time, in addition to setting up the Duneland School
Corporation Learn to Swim program. Prior to that he
served as the assistant swim coach at Ben Davis High School from
2002-2005, along with being the head coach of that middle school
program and a country club program in Indianapolis. He has
been swimming since the age of 7, which included a high school
career at Kokomo High School and a college career at Butler
University. He has his bachelor's in education, and teaches
math at Chesterton High School.
